Astrology & the Millennium – Executive Summary

The Millennium ...

  • Is sensationalized. It promotes both our worst fears and our fondest hopes. No one knows what will happen, but there is already a flood of wild speculation.
  • Is a mass-psychological event. Astrology is a means of anticipating the "archetypal shape" (broad underlying psychological pattern) of events.
  • Demands an astrological perspective to help us to "imagine forward," to rehearse for coming events, and to focus on a practical and rational response.
  • Is preceded by specific occurrences in the near past (the "Precursors," see below) that offer a clue to what is coming and how to understand it.
  • Is informed by particular astrological patterns in the near term that support a re-envisioning of the future and an empowering of ourselves as actors in that future.

The Astrological Precursors

  • 1993 (but still affecting ongoing events). Uranus conjunct Neptune is a current "revolutionizing" cycle, seen, for example, in the cultural paradigm shifts of the Italian Renaissance (1470's) and the Romantic Movement of the 1800’s. (This is also connected to 1968 Uranus/Pluto conjunction and is profoundly affecting those born in the last half of the 1960’s.)
  • January 1996 - March 2003. Uranus in Aquarius signals a seven-year cycle of "Mental Quickening," with an acceleration of information flow and an escalation of
new discoveries in science and technology (the ubiquitous microchip is only the beginning).
  • November 1998 - April 2011. Neptune enters Aquarius for a fourteen-year cycle of "Spiritual Awakening," during which we collectively address the issue of how best to treat the wounded Body-Mind-Soul. (The use of alternative health treatments has exploded in 90's, and it is estimated that alternative care will be a 10 to 15 billion dollar industry in the next decade. This trend will increase, fueled by the increase in supportive scientific findings on alternative methods.)
  • On the personal level, Neptune in Aquarius asks, "What is the condition of your internal universe?" Our minds are opening to subtle levels of perception, and becoming more receptive to both external and internal input. We are all undergoing a psychic-emotional "digestion" of an ever-increasing flow of information.
  • Consciousness of what we are trying to digest is imperative. (Media researchers at the University of Sussex "found that 71% of network news time was devoted to stories that showed their central characters as having little or no control over their fate." David Jacobson. Health, November-December, p. 66.)
  • Recommendation: Treat information-intake as occasional fine dining, rather than a Big Mac break. Try a "Media Fast." Increase meditation, silence, contemplation, study. Substitute exercise for information consumption. Walk off TV "mind-fat"!

Critical Events for ’99 to ’00:

"Y2K," much-anticipated computer foul-ups on 1/1/2000, seem to be absorbing much of the public preoccupation for millennial fantasies (much better than apocalyptic mass-suicide). Y2K seems to be functioning as an "archetype" – a collective psychological idea that shapes both individual and collective responses to the Millennium.

Computer hi-jinks (in your desktop as well as the ones you don’t even know you depend on) are indeed likely, especially from July 13 to May of 2000, and we should have practical contingency plans just in case. Back up your hard drive! Consider having a bit of extra cash, a few candles, and some nonperishable groceries on hand.

  • March 1, 1999. Saturn moves into the sign of Taurus, offering an opportunity to "get grounded," reestablish what counts most, and get back to basics – survival, simplicity, and preparedness. Start or reinforce a spiritual practice to counter coming times of unpredictability and confusion.
  • June, 1999-May 2000 (exact dates July 17, November 14, 1999 and May 12, 2000). Saturn is in challenging aspect to Uranus. This is the most likely times for systemic disruptions of technology – computer glitches, and power outages. Be adaptable and flexible. (Our unexplained power outage last weekend.)
  • July 13-Aug 9-Mercury is "Retrograde," adding to computer and communication confusion. Did I mention backing up your hard drive? You should have done it by now!
  • August 11. (Chart) Breakdown/breakthrough. This Solar Eclipse is a mysterious turning point for transforming toxic conditions (spiritual, mental, emotional, physical) into healthy ones, both in ourselves and in our immediate communities. Most karmic degrees. Pulled in opposite directions.
  • Mars opposite Saturn (We usually experience one Mars-Saturn opposition every two years. From 1997-1999 we will have six!) Changes fixed structures. Leads to a breakdown of old value structures. Mars cuts out dead wood.
  • Saturn over Washington. The issue is self-reliance vs. dependence on culture and its institutions. There is a new opportunity to heal old family, as well as cultural wounds.

Suggestions using the energy of the Millennium:

  • Create a ritual: intention, invocation, enactment, completion, integration.
  • Involve yourself in a creative project.
  • Dispense with outworn patterns.
  • Consider Bodywork, shamanic journeying (no drugs), healing.
  • Dedicate yourself to creating a future worth living for yourself and others.

Recent News – The Solar Eclipse

     by Barbara Schermer

Although the Millennium has an official candy (M&M), official dance (the Milly), and many travel agents scurrying to find the best place to experience the Great Odometer Moment of December 31, 1999 at 11:59 p.m., the Millennium is not Big News for astrologers. Other than the Pluto-Chiron conjunction in Sagittarius on December 30, 1999, the Millennium is an astrological non-event.

What is huge news are two potent times that bracket the Millennium date and those are May of 2000 and August 11, 1999. We'll talk about the May 2000 alignment in a future column, so stay tuned at this website.

Today we'd like to discuss the most dramatic planetary alignment of this century, the Total Solar eclipse of August 11, 1999. It occurs at 1:09 p.m. CET, which is the time in Europe where the eclipse will be 90-100% total. Here in the United States, exact times are 7:09 a.m. EDT to 4:09 a.m. PDT on the West Coast The central path of the eclipse begins off the coast of New York City, through the British Isles and Ireland, central Europe, over the Balkans, especially Albania, across Asia minor, down the Iraq-Iran border, and through Pakistan and India. Historically, events are activated in the countries along this line and the recent news (in Kosovo, Ireland, Berlin, and on the Pakistani/Indian border) confirms this connection. Solar eclipse energy activates months in advance and for months afterwards.

This special eclipse has been written about in the astrological community over the last year. (See Mountain Astrologer June/July, 1999 issue devoted entirely to the eclipse, as well as the new August/September 1999 issue.) The chart of this date has a grand cross involving five planets (the Sun/Moon in Leo, Uranus opposite in Aquarius, Mars in Scorpio and Saturn in Taurus at right angles. In short, this remarkable confluence of energy marks a turning point, for transforming toxic conditions (physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual) into healthy ones, both in ourselves, in our families, communities, and in the collective.

Symbolically, this meaning of this eclipse dramatically emphasizes the different directions we are being pushed and pulled into and demands that we examine crucial issues now.

The Leo/Aquarius axis calls us to contemplate how we use our individual creative energy and our inspiration to express ourselves as unique individuals and how we relate and connect that creativity to our families and to the collective. The Internet is essentially a mechanism that is evolving the "group mind" (Aquarius) in which we all individually participate (Leo). The Taurus/Scorpio axis asks us to re-examine what we value in our personal lives, thinking especially about the simple basics (Taurus) and how we use/abuse our resources individually, in our families and in the collective (Scorpio).

The eclipse occurs at 15-18 degrees of the fixed signs: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. According to Kriya Yoga, these midpoint degrees are considered the "most karmic" degrees of the zodiac. What this means for each individual is the power of the eclipse energy is felt in the deepest part of our psyches. Long held psychic patterns and structures are breaking down now and chunks of repressed psychic material are surfacing. The energy of the eclipse allows us to breakthrough to ancient psychic layers and transform the wounds we find there.

Secondly, we can now symbolically "pour wet cement." This means we now have an opportunity to blast open the dry concrete of our old rigid habitual patterns that are no longer serving us and can replace them with more fluid, positive and constructive ones. Now is the time to integrate more healthy patterns into our deep psychic structures.

This eclipse asks every one of us, "What is your daily personal contribution to the cultural, ethnic, racial toxicity and health that you experience collectively? What are your own fears, prejudices, greed, selfishness, intolerance, and resistance? What are your own hopes, impartiality, generosity, selflessness, tolerance and flexibility?

Here are my recommendations of how to take full advantage of this momentous opportunity:

Take off work August 10th and 11th. You don't want to be on a bus or in mundane environments while this profound event is happening. Invest yourself in a creative project in July and August to allow you to consciously move the increasing energy. The best creative project ? Consciously plan to heal your own wounds, the wounds and rifts in your family, and the wounds of humanity. How? By letting go, accepting, forgiving, and re-visioning new positive possibilities.

Be aware of your habitual patterns: what you eat and absorb into your system-- physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Know who and what nourishes you. Cleanse your body, emotions, mind and spirit. Use fasting, body work, in-depth massage, Rolfing, Bio-energetics, Psychosynthesis, Grof breathwork, colonics, meditating, praying, staying centered. Plan and celebrate a ritual and ceremony by yourself or with a group. Banish the old, empower the new. Let go of your fears, invite your hopes.

Buckminster Fuller spoke often of the trim tab, the four-inch piece of metal at the bottom of the rudder of oceangoing ships. When the Captain gives the command to change course, the trim tab is the tiny piece of metal that changes, that moves the rudder that eventually changes the course of the whole ship. What negative emotions, thoughts, and beliefs might you alter toward more positive emotions, thoughts, and beliefs?

The influence of this eclipse began on May 1st when the transiting moon nodes conjoined the eclipse degree. This means that a drumbeat has begun. We are whether we are conscious or not starting a sacred worldwide ritual. The drumbeat is now increasing in speed and intensity to its peak on August 11th. Can you hear it in your own life?
